Specialist clinic for knee prostheses - your experts in endoprosthetics Hellersen

Do you have pain in your knee, especially when walking on uneven ground or climbing stairs? Are you afraid of slipping with your knee in everyday life? Such complaints are often a sign of advanced knee osteoarthritis - wear and tear of the knee joint. Due to its complex structure and daily strain, the knee is particularly susceptible to signs of wear and tear - especially in old age or after years of physical strain. Over time, this can lead to pain, stiffness and restricted movement, which can significantly reduce quality of life.

The doctors at Sportklinik Hellersen aim to preserve your knee joint for as long as possible and to repair injured structures in the best possible way. If this is no longer sufficiently possible, the specialists at Endoprosthetics Hellersen will ensure pain-free mobility and a new quality of life with a knee prosthesis.

Endoprothetik Hellersen specializes in the implantation of knee and hip prostheses and performs over 850 procedures every year - including complex replacement operations. The focus is on precise treatment, long-term stability and sustainable restoration of mobility.

When is a knee prosthesis necessary?

Common causes for a knee prosthesis are

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatic diseases
  • Bone necrosis
  • Post-traumatic joint changes

The decision to use an artificial knee joint depends on the degree of joint wear and the condition of the surrounding ligaments and muscles.

Partial or full prosthesis - which knee prosthesis is the right one?

The sled prosthesis (partial endoprosthesis)

If only part of the knee joint - usually the inner side - is affected, a sled prosthesis (partial endoprosthesis) can be used. The sled prosthesis is often used when only part of the knee joint is affected by wear and tear and needs to be replaced with an artificial joint. Prerequisite: an intact cruciate ligament and no advanced damage on the opposite side.

The full prosthesis (total endoprosthesis)

Sled prostheses account for around 10 to 15 percent of knee prosthesis operations. Full prostheses are implanted much more frequently at our specialist clinic. This is necessary if the outside of the knee joint is also damaged.

If the ligaments are also damaged, a pure surface replacement of the knee joint is not sufficient. In this case, coupled prostheses provide the necessary stability. Coupled prostheses consist of two stainless steel components for the upper and lower joint surfaces and a PET plastic. In contrast to non-coupled knee prostheses, the upper and lower parts of the prosthesis are connected to each other in a coupled prosthesis.

When will I be fit again after knee surgery?

Thanks to modern pain therapy, pain-adapted full weight-bearing is already possible on the day of the operation - without the need for a pain catheter. This facilitates early mobilization, promotes faster recovery and improves the overall results.

Robot-assisted knee prosthesis in the specialized robotics center

The VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution from Johnson & Johnson MedTech Orthopaedics (DePuy Synthes) is used at the Hellersen Arthroplasty Center - a high-precision system that supports the surgeon in the exact alignment of the knee prosthesis. The implant can be adapted to the individual anatomy with millimeter precision. The result: an optimal fit, even joint loading and high stability. The precise incision is made without additional CT or MRI scans - without any radiation exposure and with efficient surgical preparation.
