International congress participants in Cairo follow live operations at the Lüdenscheid specialist clinic
Sportklinik Hellersen is continuing its success story - both on the international medical stage and as one of the leading drivers of innovation in the German healthcare sector. Proof of this is the award from FOCUS Business with the "Leading Innovator 2026" seal.
In four of the five categories assessed - strategy and innovation culture, products and services, business model and organization - Sportklinik Hellersen achieved top marks, clearly setting itself apart from the average. With an almost perfect score - a total of 14 out of 15 possible points - the specialist clinic is one of the most innovative companies in Germany. Particularly noteworthy is the area of organizational innovation, where Sportklinik Hellersen sets standards.
One example of the high innovative strength of Sportklinik Hellersen is its recent participation in the 77th Annual Congress of the Egyptian Orthopaedic Association (EOA) in Cairo. Under the title "Innovative developments and state-of-the-art treatment methods", the EOA congress brought together leading experts, doctors and young scientists from all over the world. A total of 22 international specialists - including speakers from Japan, France, China, the UK and India - shared their latest findings and experiences. At the invitation of the congress organizers, Sportklinik Hellersen was also represented by a delegation in Cairo and was personally welcomed by Prof. Dr. Adel Adawy, the former Minister of Health of Egypt, and Prof. Mohamed Elashhab, Secretary General of the congress. With thousands of participants, the congress is regarded as one of the most important and largest orthopaedic meetings in the Middle East and Africa.

In addition to a workshop on endoprosthetics, which showcased the high level of expertise of the Center for Artificial Joint Replacement at the Sportklinik Hellersen, and an exhibition stand as an international partner, the Sportklinik Hellersen provided the highlight of the four-day congress with two live operations. The operations were sent directly from Sportklinik Hellersen in Lüdenscheid to Cairo.
First, a robot-assisted knee joint operation demonstrated the state-of-the-art use of the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution and the surgical expertise of Sportklinik Hellersen. The clinic was one of the first facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia to establish robot-assisted procedures as an integral part of arthroplasty, thereby setting new standards. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and highly specialized surgical expertise enables implantations with maximum precision and individual adaptation - further proof of the pioneering role of Sportklinik Hellersen.
Head physician Dr. Stefan Schmidl explained the procedure live to the congress participants in Cairo, giving them a direct insight into the procedure, which was then discussed in detail in the plenary session.
The second live broadcast showed a cruciate ligament operation, which underlined the surgical expertise and technical precision of the Sportklinik Hellersen in joint surgery. Head physician Dr. Markus Leyh commented on the procedure for the specialist audience in Cairo, who showed great interest.
"Taking part in the EOA Congress was a great opportunity to present our medical expertise and the capabilities of German cutting-edge medicine internationally. It underlines the high standing of our surgeons in international comparison. Only through specialization, international cooperation and the use of digital technologies can we offer the highest quality and actively shape the standards of tomorrow," says Dirk Burghaus, CEO of Sportklinik Hellersen.
With its involvement in Cairo, Sportklinik Hellersen is once again underlining its claim to make medical innovations from Lüdenscheid visible worldwide. The fact that this innovative strength has now been awarded a national prize by FOCUS Business is a wonderful recognition.
