Continuous further development strengthens patient safety and treatment quality
Sportklinik Hellersen has once again been recognized for its special commitment to patient safety and has achieved Gold status in Patient Blood Management (PBM). With the highest rating in Germany, the specialist clinic for orthopaedics, trauma surgery, sports medicine and endoprosthetics has been certified for the period 2026 to 2028.
The Sportklinik Hellersen was awarded the silver certificate for the first time back in 2024. Since then, the specialist clinic has consistently developed its processes and firmly anchored them in everyday clinical practice. Patient Blood Management is a patient-centered, evidence-based medical concept with the aim of improving patients' blood health, reducing blood loss and limiting the use of foreign blood to what is absolutely necessary.
More safety for patients
The concept comprises a broad spectrum of medical measures that begin even before a planned operation. These include, for example, the early detection and treatment of anaemia, the minimization of blood loss during an operation and the use of blood products tailored to the individual patient.
"For us, patient blood management means that we take care of our patients' blood health at a very early stage and in a very targeted manner," explains Dr. Timm Steuber, Head of Anaesthesia at the Sportklinik Hellersen, and Ivana Wierich, Senior Consultant Anaesthetist and doctor responsible for transfusions at the Hellersen Sports Clinic, adds: "We check whether anaemia is present before an operation and treat it if necessary. During treatment, we take care to keep blood loss to a minimum and only use blood reserves when it is really medically necessary. This approach makes the treatment safer overall, reduces the risk of complications and supports a faster recovery."
Dirk Burghaus, CEO of Sportklinik Hellersen, also emphasizes the importance of the renewed award: "The journey from silver to gold within two years shows how seriously we take our quality standards. We want our patients from the region to know that they will receive the highest level of medical care here."
With the gold certification, the Hellersen Sports Clinic confirms its position as one of the clinics in Germany that comprehensively and successfully implement Patient Blood Management and thus make an important contribution to modern and patient-oriented medicine.
